Jill Scott's mother Joyce Scott gave birth to Jill on the 4th of April, 1972 in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. As an only girl, she was raised also by her maternal grandmother. Scott attended Philadelphia High School for Girls. Upon graduation, Scott enrolled into Temple University. In between two job opportunities as a teacher, she was studying secondary education. She was hoping to become an high school English teacher. She had a dream of becoming an English teacher at high school was cut short after she quit school. As a poet started performing, she was able to perform in poetry performances live. Then she joined along with Amir Quest Thompson (of The Roots) to form a group. You Got Me was co-written by the two. During an Roots show she was spotted to be an artist. After that, she got collaborations for instance, with Eric Benet Will Smith, and Common. Additionally, she gained experience as a performer during her participation in the Canada stage of the Broadway musical production Rent. She was the first artist signed by Hidden Beach Recordings.
